This is a most unusual species that is widely distributed from Costa Rica across Northern South America to Trinidad, but not common anywhere. We have found this plant in Costa Rica, Panama and Venezuela, but never more than just one or a few at a time. It lives in mostly low altitude coastal scrub forests in very bright and hot places. It is mainly a twig epiphyte, living in small clusters on slender branches. The plants are very distinctive, twisted, tightly spindle shaped with few, very thick and fleshy leaves that are medium green with silvery trichomes arranged into a banding pattern. It is attractive and unusual. The inflorescence is a simple spike that extends just above the foliage, light salmon-pink with yellow flowers. In nature these plants are rarely found in an upright position, perhaps indicating that they do not want water in between their leaves, which are tightly held together. Pure water, bright conditions and warmth are recommended for optimum growth.
