A plant of the lower Amazonian slopes of the Andes in Peru where it lives high in the canopy of the forest along the Rio Maranon. Known only from the type collection by Wurdak in 1962 (perhaps others but not recorded) as reported from the vicinity of Alta Amazonas, slopes of Cerros Campanaquiz at Pongo de Manseriche in the state of Loreto, Peru. A handsome plant with a bulbous shape, dark, strap-shaped, chestnut-brown leaves, bearing fairly stout marginal spines.
The inflorescence is nested deep in the heart with white bracts and white flowers with a deep red center flush at anthesis. A stoloniferous species producing offsets on 6 to 10 inch stolons. Our plants came from the collection at the Marie Selby Botanical Garden with an accession number of SEL2000-0387, and are descended from a plant that was given by Wurdak to Burle-Marx in Brazil.
