A spectacular, large growing species of the lower and middle slopes of the Andes, occurring from Venezuela to Bolivia.  In Venezuela it also occurs in the ‘Lost World’ or Guyana Shield region.

An epiphyte or occasional terrestrial in moist forest it has broad leathery leaves and a tall, stacked inflorescence of red to yellow bracts.  This species has many forms and has been much sought as a hybrid parent, its ‘blood line’ occurring in many of today’s most spectacular hybrids.  As a stand alone species though it is rare in cultivation.  Our spectacular clone originated in Ecuador.
