A large shrub to small tree of the spiny forests of southern Madagascar. Known as the Zig-Zag tree, it is the only species in the genus Decaryia, a member of the Didiereaceae. In cultivation it is noted to be slow growing, difficult to root cuttings but otherwise an easy plant to cultivate. The stems are woody and are kinked or zig-zag in shape, erect at first then drooping. Twin spines are produced at each bend in the stem. The leaves are small and rounded, but sometimes do not appear in a whole season. Propagation by seed requires two plants of opposite sex as this is a dioecious species.
