A variegated form of the species that used to be widely known as bromelioides v. tricolor. Some years ago Harry Luther straightened out the confusion of the species, and so now the variegated form becomes a cultivar and the oldest commonly used name, ‘Rainbow Star’ was chosen to be registered. An upright grower to about 12 inches tall and wide with 1.25 inch wide leaves in a funnel form shape rare in Cryptanthus.
The leaves are variegated with wide white margins and are red towards the base and lack the scurff found in most Cryptanthus. The spineless plant produces many offsets, starting well before anthesis.
