One of the bizarre species with a tulip-shaped head with densely packed branches bearing wooly bracts and purplish-pink flowers. The plants are large, to 30 inches, and spreading, with narrow leaves of shiny green. The center blushes vivid red at anthesis, then fades gradually over time. The inflorescence, which is about 4in across, can last for many months. This species was discovered in Bahia, Brazil by Wally Berg and John Anderson in 1997.
