A rare new species only described in 2002 by Leme and Sequeira, after the publication of the Leme’s Canistrum revision. The description was published in the BSI Journal Vol 52 #3 in 2002 and is accompanied by an excellent article and photos. An epiphyte from the tiny northeastern Brazilian state of Alagoas where it grows in critically endangered remnants of the Mata Atlantica. This species forms an upright rosette of stiff, narrow, deeply channeled leaves to about 30 inches tall that are coated with silvery trichomes over dark greenish-brown. Marginal spines are stout and deep brownish-black. The inflorescence, which exceeds the leaves, is a cone of stiff, imbricate bracts, deep orange-red in color with yellow flowers. This is a handsome species that lasts a very long time in bloom. Our plants originated from the Selby collection and have the Selby collection number of SEL01-0249A.
