A wonderful species that we collected originally on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Ecuador, in the Amazon drainage area where the forest transitions from montane to lowland.  Here there are quite a few species that were once in the genus Streptocalyx, such as this one, and some that look very much as though they should be.

This plant is a beauty with strap like green leaves with small but sharp marginal spines, forming a leafy rosette to over 30 inches across.  The inflorescence is cone like in appearance with broad reddish-orange bracts, tipped in white which conceal the flowers.  It’s quite showy and very long lasting.
