An epiphytic Brazilian species with an upright, tubular vase shape and the corn cob shaped inflorescence typical of the Macrochordion subgenus of Aechmea. This species has been confused and been sold over the years under several names but it does have distinctive traits that make it easy to identify. The inflorescence is white, with yellow flowers and retuse floral bracts that terminate in a V-shaped notch. Scape bracts are vivid pink. Flowers emerge from the bottom of the inflorescence to the top in sequence, turning black after anthesis. Showy in a pot or in landscape and fairly cold hardy too.
