This is one of only two species in this odd and obscure genus. Having little in common with the other species, strobilacea, it differs in having upright, very thin, deeply channeled leaves, heavily armed with black spines and a short inflorescence nested within the foliage with large, light blue flowers.
An altogether curious and interesting species. Forms large clusters if left undivided and makes an interesting hanging basket subject.
