As part of the greater Guyana Shield or 'Lost World', this part of the region is a largely seasonally flooded savannah with granitic inselbergs, or outcrops of granitic rock called 'lajas' locally. These rock islands hold a high degree of endemic flora and among them the Pitcairnia pruinosa. Very un-Pitcairnia like with broad, stiff, glabrous leaves dusted with a waxy powder, bearing large, hooked marginal spines. The inflorescence is a red scape with multiple branches and large sessile flowers. The foliage can be green to gray or even reddish in strong light.
