An excellent species with one of the nicest blooms of the genus has been in cultivation for many years. First collected by Mulford Foster near Maracas, Bahia, Brazil in 1948, it was subsequently described by Lyman Smith and was introduced into cultivation, but has never been common. It has narrow, deeply channeled leaves of light green and a tall spike with long stiff green scape bracts, bright red floral bracts and white flowers in tightly clustered heads. Easy to grow under normal terrestrial bromeliad conditions.
