This fern is an interesting, epiphytic, myrmecophyte (ant plant) with scaly, thick, hollow rhizomes with single 3 to 6 inch leaves spaced at regular intervals. It occurs across much of S.E. Asia down across Borneo to northern Australia, it grows at low to medium altitudes in hot to intermediate forests. Often ant symbiotic species live in nutrient poor situations such as open scrub, where there is little food or water but an abundance of ants. Considered an easy grower, though perhaps a little slow growing. We grow our plants epiphytically allowing the plants to dry between watering; this gives the plants a distinct character, much as wild specimens.
