A beautifully compact rosette with glaucous gray leaves, broadly rounded at the tips with a dark reddish-brown terminal spine and marginal 'teeth'. Of several varieties of this species, this is one of the larger growing, reportedly to 4 feet across, though usually smaller. Formerly known as Agave patonii, it is native to the Mexican state of Durango, it is drought hardy and fairly cold hardy too. Easy to grow, it lives for years before sending up a tall scape with yellow flowers. Many offsets are produced around the base.
