An exciting new species described by López-Ferrari, Espejo & Martínez-Correa in 2009. Native to southern Mexico in the states of Morelos, Puebla & Oaxaca (ours is from Huajuapan de Leon, Oaxaca) where it forms carpet-like colonies. The leaves are silvery-green, about an inch wide, tapering to a point, with large spines, scalloped margins and ‘blood spots’ when grown in good light. The most interesting feature, to us anyway, is its stoloniferous habit. The plants easily form large clusters in cultivation, with offsets nicely spaced. This species is similar to stenopetala, but differs in part by having a twice-branched inflorescence. A rare species.
