Encholirium pedicellata Biribiri, Minas Gerais 2/14 DJC - An extremely rare miniature species of Encholirium endemic to the Diamantina Plateau in central Minas Gerais state of Brazil. Known from only a few tiny colonies, this is one of the rarest plants in Brazil and considered critically endangered in habitat. It lives on rocky ground consisting of sands and quartz pebbles amongst rock outcrops and boulders on an escarpment. The plants reproduces in nature almost exclusively by offset production as seed germination and continued growth is extremely rare. The plants are tiny, barely three inches across with few thick, broadly triangular leaves bearing large marginal spines and heavily coated with silver scurf. The inflorescence is a spike about 20 inches tall with chartreuse-green, bell-shaped, sessile flowers borne on short pedicles. Sensitive to over watering, it is otherwise not difficult to grow in bright, warm conditions in very well draining mix.
